Abstract

Recently, as the population becomes older, the eldery suffering from dementia increase, requiring multi-faceted approaches to help them. Under such circumstances, this study was aimed at determining the effects of a horticulture therapy on dementia seniles¡¯ cognitive function and behaviors. In order to determine the effects of the horticulture therapy program on dementia seniles¡¯ cognitive function, everyday life ability, depression and problematic behavior, 10 seniles were sampled from a public welfare hall to be subject to 14 rounds of a horticulture therapy program consisting of a 30minute horticultural work and dialogue per day. The horticulture therapy program comprised sowing, seeding, transpiantatation, vase work, hydroponics, flower arrangement, etc. All the subjects were examined for their condition before and after the test which took 3 months from March 25 to June 24. The collected data were processed for frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviations and Fridman test.
The results of the study can be summarized as follows:
1. The dementia seniles¢¥ cognitive ftmnction. was improved significantly by the therapy from the pre-therapy average 16.8 to post-therapy average 17.4. 2. The everyday life ability of dementia seniles was improved significantly by the therapy to 17.6, a 0.3 higher than before the therapy. 3. The depression index was also lowered significantly by the therapy from 49.0 to 44.1. 4. The index of dementia seniles¢¥ problematic behaviors was also improved significantly by the therapy from the pre-therapy average 20.3 to post-therapy average 27.1. As discussed above, it was found through this study that the horticultural therapy program served to improve dementia seniles¢¥ cognitive function, everyday life ability, depression and problematic behaviors. To be more specific, their cognitive functions such as sense of elapsed time, place, mental concentration, calculation and judegement improved most, while such everyday activities as bathing. walldng and stepping improved much. All in all, it may be concluded that the horticultural therapy program would be used properly as nursing intervention to change dementia seniles¡¯ cognitive functions and behavior in a desirable way. In this regard, it is suggested that this program aiming to enhance dementia seniles¡¯ welfare should be adopted to cure their, troubled cognitive functions and behaviors. Lastly, it is hoped that this study would be followed up by future studies developing diverse anti-dementia therapies.
